Recent quasar discovery changing our understanding of galaxies

Peering deep into the infancy of the universe, the European Southern Observatory recently confirmed the discovery of the brightest and fastest growing quasar ever spotted in space. Quasars are luminous objects in the night sky powered by gas falling into a large black hole at the center of a galaxy.

When Sean Speaks

On Thursday, March 14, 2024, MISD Hosted Sean Carter and his mother Jenny Carter for their “When Sean Speaks” program. Sean was a passenger in a drunk driving vehicle crash in 2005.An aspiring lawyer, his life was forever changed that night.

YEDC approves several grants

The Yoakum Economic Development Corporation approved the allocation of several grants at the March 18 meeting.One of the grants was for Varela’s Best. The Varelas applied for a YEDC Small Business Improvement Grant in April of 2023.

Council receives racial profiling report

The Yoakum City Council received the 2023 racial profiling report from the Yoakum Police Department at the March 12 meeting.The report showed that there was a total of 1,035 traffic stops. Of the 1,035 traffic stops, 461 individuals were Hispanic, 466 were white, 98 were black, and ten were Asian.

YHS Student Council earns statewide recognition

Yoakum High School (YHS) Student Council has been recognized by the Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC)for its Top Project submission. TASC has almost 1,200 member schools. Of those, it is one of only 10 high school student councils statewide to receive the highly esteemed honor.
