Apply for ballots by mail now for upcoming March primaries

Those wanting to take part in the upcoming March 5 primaries have a couple of dates they will want to take note of between now and election day. The first is Monday, Feb. 5. That’s the final day to register as a voter to participate in the March 5 primary elections.

The Lavaca County Commissioners’ Court met in its first regular meeting for the new year with a short agenda. Prior to meeting on Monday, the court held a special-called meeting on Friday, Jan. 5, where it conducted interviews on three candidates for the Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace seat.

Lavaca County papers publisher L.M. Preuss passes away

L.M. “Buddy” Preuss III, longtime newspaper publisher and owner of the Shiner Gazette, Hallettsville Tribune-Herald, the Moulton Eagle and the Yoakum Herald-Times, to name a few of his newspapers, passed away at his home surrounded by family members on the morning of Friday, Jan. 5.

Farm Bureau to host Ag Seminar

Lavaca County Farm Bureau will hold an Ag Seminar on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024, at Arthur Kaspar Pavilion, 135 CR 350 in Shiner.  Two hours of CEU credits (1 - Laws & Regulations and 1 - General) will be offered for private applicators.  Registration will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Power-up grant received by Police Department

The Moulton Police Department received a $20,000 power-up grant from GVEC for the Police Department. “This is actually the second time we received the grant,” Police Chief Daniel Beyer said. “There’s a lot of departments and organizations that apply for it, so we were very lucky to receive it.

Moulton ISD to host Junior Livestock

Moulton ISD is gearing up for its Moulton Junior Livestock Association Show on Sunday, Jan. 14. The event will take place in the Show Barn, or the new Bus Shed, at the Moulton ISD campus. Broilers will be judged first beginning at 11 a.m. that day.

What is that fuzzy black caterpillar?

If you’ve been watching your step, there’s a good chance you may have spotted some fuzzy black caterpillars inching their way across roads, sidewalks or yards over the past several weeks. Woollybear caterpillars are common across the U.S.

YHS StuCo receives grant for campus beautification project

The Kluck Foundation, Inc. recently presented a grant of $10,000 to the Yoakum High School Student Council’s project “Bulldog Beautification.

Lavaca Historical Museum spruces up exhibits

The Lavaca Historical Museum has been working hard to spruce up their exhibits since the COVID-19 pandemic. “We just didn’t have any visitors during the pandemic. We shut down for three months and we started coming back one at a time,” Museum coordinator Tracy Stephenson said.
