Yoakum FFA makes second consecutive state appearance

Yoakum Future Farmers of America (FFA) members competed at the Area XII Leadership Development Events at Blinn College in Brenham on Nov. 18. There were four Yoakum FFA teams qualifying for the event. Senior Spanish Creed Speaker Jenny Lopez finished 11th.

Deputy Santa collections now in full swing

Deputy Santa collections are now in full swing as members of the four Chamber of Commerce Royalty Courts have started collecting toys for all age groups. The groups gather gifts from newborns to ten-year-olds, according to Lavaca County Chief Deputy and Deputy Santa Coordinator J.R. Peters.

Commissioners seek extension

Commissioners have sent a letter to the Texas General Land Office seeking an extension of time to submit a project list for the GLO Grant at the Nov. 23 meeting. This grant is $1.3 million and is Hurricane Harvey money which is to be used for parts of the county that are low to moderate income.

Mission accomplished: siblings reunited after two years apart

In a touching reunion that unfolded on Monday, November 20, brother and sister, Alvin Svoboda and Charlene Oehl, experienced their joyous reunion after a prolonged separation of over two years. This day was also Alvin’s 87th birthday, adding even more sentiment to the occasion.

Harrigan presents interesting facts about Arbor Day at Garden Club Meeting

Christmas on Grand planned for Dec. 2

The Yoakum Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to present Christmas on the Grand on Saturday, Dec. 2 and will be once again be bringing snow to Yoakum in the Railroad Park. Local businesses will be open for shopping needs 10 a.m.- 6 p.m.

VFW Auxiliary covers large agenda at Nov. 8 meeting

The VFW Auxiliary to the Lavaca Memorial Post #6382 met in regular session on Nov 8 at Sacred Heart Family Center. The meeting opened according to ritual with 17 members present. Roll call of officers found all present with exception of conductress, pro-tem Doris Janak.

St. James’ Annual Christmas Coffee planned for Dec. 7

St. James’ Episcopal Church invites you to their Annual Christmas Coffee and Lunch on Thursday, Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. The church is located at 1103 East 4th Street in Hallettsville (Highway 90-A East at Tate). Join them for various homemade sandwiches, soups, salad plates and desserts.
