Shiner, St. Paul football: Cards host Northland Christian to start district; Shiner plays at Weimar

Houston Northland Christian at St. Paul
After a bye week, St. Paul gets underway with district play with a home game against Houston Northland Christian.
The Cougars posted a 1-4 mark in non district with a win against Katy St. John XXIII 26-0.
Northland Christian is scoring just 10.8 points a game on offense and surrendering  19.6 points a game.
“They have several key players on offense who can make explosive plays,” St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. “I feel we can win this game and the rest of our games from here on out. We mainly need to continue focusing on improving.
The Cougars run a spread offense, and can run the ball or throw it.
St. Paul’s defense will need to be ready for both a running and passing attack.
“They have a good quarterback, running back and receivers,” Wachsmuth said. “Whether they run the ball or throw it depends on who they are playing. We need to stop the run and prevent big plays.”
The Cougars defense will play aggressively and attack the Cardinals, using linebacker blitzes.
“We have to be ready up front to pick up those blitzes or we could have negative-yard plays,” Wachsmuth said.
Shiner at Weimar
The Wildcats are 3-2 and lost their district opener to Kenedy 40-39.
The Wildcats are scoring 34.4 points a game and giving up 15 points a contest.
Weimar has a lot of size up front, will play physical and look to run the football.
“It is going to be a physical game,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “I think the line of scrimmage will be key and it will come down to which defense can get stops.”
Treycen Espita and Ace Mesa will be the primary rushers in Weimar’s ground attack.
“It will be crucial for our defense to get some stops on their offense,” Boedeker said.
As is the case each game so far, the success of the Shiner offense will rest primarily on the push the Comanches get up front.
“We need to play lower than them up front and get a good push. If we are unable to do that, it could lead to a stalemate,” Boedeker said.
