Edwin J. Herman
Edwin John Herman, 81, of Shiner, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
He was born on May 22, 1945, in Shiner, to Louis and Annie (Dolezal) Herman.
Edwin was raised in Shiner alongside his sister, Dorothy (Herman) Kremling, and his two brothers, Aloise Herman and Dan Herman. He attended St. Ludmila Elementary School and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1963. Not long after, he met the love of his life, Joan, and they were married on June 3, 1967, at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner. Together, they built a loving home and were blessed with two children, Brian and Michele.
Edwin worked for many years as a distributor for Coca-Cola before retiring. He later joined Kaspar Wire Works in Shiner. Affectionately known as “Possum” by family and friends, Edwin was truly a jack of all trades. In his spare time, he enjoyed creating practical inventions and building anything Joan could imagine.
Among his many projects were a cucumber washing station for their large garden and a handcrafted guitar and music stand for Joan. He loved spending time in his workshop, where he was always tinkering with a new idea. If the shop doors were open, visitors knew they were welcome—and there was always a cold beer waiting in the refrigerator.
Edwin is survived by his son, Brian Christopher Herman and his wife, Michelle; his daughter, Michele Herman and her partner, Heather; his grandchildren, Christopher (Kelsie) Herman, Matthew (Ashley) Herman, and Emma Herman; his step-grandchildren, twins Hendrix and Halle Elliott, and Maya Elliott; and his great-grandchildren, Klaira Herman and Averie Herman.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan; his parents, Louis and Annie (Dolezal) Herman; and his brothers-in-law, Marvin Kremling and William Petru.
Although his passing brings deep sorrow, his family finds comfort in knowing he is at peace, free from pain, and reunited with his loving wife in the presence of the Lord.
A rosary was recited at 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 13 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church.
Funeral Mass was celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday at the church.
Interment followed at Shiner Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers were his grandsons, Christopher Herman and Matthew Herman; his step-grandson, Hendrix Elliott; and his nephews, Billy Jack Petru, C.J. Knight, and Travis Kremling.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice of South Texas.
