Local sports: Shiner Junior Softball picks up win during historical run at World Series

The Shiner Junior Little League Softball All-Stars team played five games in the Little League World Series Aug. 2 through 7 in Kirkland, Wash., losing their first four games but finishing their historical run with a win in their  final game.
Southwest 10, Washington D9 3
Shiner picked up a 10-3 win on Friday in their final game of the tournament, a ‘friendly’ against Washington D9.
Shiner scored three runs in the first inning and four in the second for a 7-0 lead.
Washington D9 closed the gap to 7-2 in the top of the fourth inning.
Shiner outscored them 1-0 in the fifth and 2-1 in the sixth.
Avery Colman had a hot day at the plate as she went 3-for-4, one run, three RBI, one run and a double. Also for Shiner, Charlotte Hairell hit 1-for-3, double, run and one RBI; Andi Mikulencak was 1-for-2, two runs, one RBI and a double; Amara Cuevas hit 1-for-3, run and RBI; Eastyn Pohler hit 1-for-2, run and two RBI; Reese Lyons got two hits and scored two runs; Addison Ulcak was 1-for-2, two RBI and two stolen bases; Patricia Price and Dawn Bishop each scored one run.
Pohler pitched four innings with three runs on two hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Colman closed with 2 2/3 innings, four hits, one run, one walk and two strikeouts.
Asia-Pacific 7, Southwest 1
Shiner started pool play on Aug. 2 against Asia-Pacific, represented by the Philippines.
After two scoreless innings, A-P scored one run in the third and recorded five runs in the fourth inning.
Shiner plated one run in the fifth frame and A-P scored one run in the seventh inning.
Shiner was held to three hits by A-P pitcher Faith Tamba who struck out 17 in the game.
At the plate, Ulcak was 1-for-2 with one run and one stolen base with Ally Trojcak and Kendyl Boehm also getting one hit each.
Colman pitched for Shiner with seven runs on 11 hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
Canada 11, Southwest 10
After five innings, Shiner led 9-7 on Aug. 3 against Canada before Canada scored four runs in the sixth inning for a 11-9 lead.
Shiner plated one run to get within one in the bottom of the seventh but could not tie or take the lead.
Shiner led 4-2 after the first inning and outscored Canada 2-0 in the second inning.
Canada got within 8-5 after the three innings and outscored Shiner 2-1 in the fourth inning. 
Shiner had better fortune at the plate with 12 hits —  Lyons was 2-for-4; Ulcak hit 1-for-3 with a double and run scored. Boehm and  Price each hit 1-for-3 with one run scored. Colman swung 1-for-3, three runs and one RBI; Cuevas was 1-for-3, one run, one RBI;  Pohler hit 1-for-3, one run, one RBI;  Bishop and  Mikulencak scored one run and had one RBI each; Trojcak scored one run.
Pohler pitched five innings with eight hits, seven runs and two strikeouts; Colman pitched two frames, four hits, four runs, two walks and one strikeout.
East 12, Southwest 1
Shiner scored just a single run on six hits in a 12-1 loss to West in five innings on Aug. 4.
East outscored Shiner 3-0 in the first and second innings, outscored Shiner 2-0 in the third and 4-0 in the fourth. Shiner scored its run in the top of the fifth.
Shiner was led at the plate by  Hairell who was 2-for-2 with one RBI and Pohler who hit a double and scored one run. Colman, Boehm, and Price each went 1-for-2.
Pohler started at pitcher and worked 1 2/3 innings with six runs on five hits, one walk and one strikeout; Colman worked 2 1/3 innings in relief with seven hits, six runs, two walks and one strikeout.
West 15, Southwest 2
Shiner closed out pool play Aug. 5 with a 15-2 loss to West.
West led 3-0 after one inning and outscored Shiner 3-1 in the second.
West added two runs in the third and had a big fourth with seven runs plated. Shiner scored one run in the fifth.
Shiner was held to six hits at the plate, led by Colman who was 2-for-2 with two runs and Hairell who got two hits. Boehm was 1-for-2 with one RBI and Ulcak brought in one run.
Colman pitched two frames with nine hits, eight runs and three walks. Pohler worked two innings with six hits, seven runs, five walks and one strikeout.
