Local youth sports: Shiner Juniors go unbeaten in round-robin play
The Shiner Junior softball team went 4-0 in round-robin play Saturday through Monday in the Southwest Regionals in Albuquerque, N.M.
Shiner 10, Greater Helotes 5
With a 3-3 tie after four innings, Shiner outscored Greater Helotes,the Texas West champion, 7-2 over the last three innings for a 10-5 win to open pool play on Saturday.
Both teams scored one run in the first inning; Shiner took a 3-1 lead in the third frame and Greater Helotes knotted the game with two runs in the fourth.
Shiner outscored Greater Helotes 4-0 in the fifth and 3-2 in the seventh.
At the plate for Shiner, Charlotte Hairell was 2-for-3, two runs, two doubles, three RBI and one stolen base while Avery Colman hit 2-for-4, two runs, triple, two RBI and two stolen bases.
Ally Trojcak went 1-for-4 with two runs.
Amara Cuevas got one hit and scored two runs.
Addison Ulcak went 1-for-3, one run and one RBI; Patricia Price hit 1-for-2, one RBI and one stolen base; Reese Lyons was 1-for-4; Andi Mikulencak got one hit and scored one run.
Kendyl Boehm added one RBI.
Colman pitched four innings with six hits, four runs, two walks and eight strikeouts.
Shiner 16, Santa Fe (N.M.) 8
Shiner scored 11 runs in the seventh inning to rally from an 8-5 deficit to defeat the hosts Santa Fe, New Mexico,16-8.
Shiner outscored Santa Fe 3-1 in the second inning after a scoreless first inning and led 5-1 after three innings. Santa Fe scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Shiner collected 17 hits at the plate led by Mikulencak who was 3-for-4, two runs, double and RBI.
Shiner’s other multi-hit batters were Colman who was 2-for-5, double, two runs and two RBI; Hairell hit 2-for-5, two runs, two RBI; Cuevas hit 2-for-5, two runs, one RBI; Boehm was 2-for-4, one run.
Lyons swung 2-for-4 with one run. Trojcak was 1-for-5 with two runs and two RBI; Ulcak got one hit, scored one run and stole one base; Price was 1-for-3, two runs, two RBI; Dawn Bishop hit 1-for-3, one run, one RBI and stole two bases.
Lyons pitched four innings and Colman worked three innings.
Shiner 12, Lake Charles (La.) 6
Hairell hit 3-for-4, two doubles, one triple, three RBI and three runs scored in Shiner’s 12-6 win over Lake Charles, Louisiana on Sunday morning.
Shiner led 3-0 after one inning, outscored Lake Charles 1-0 in the second, 3-0 in third and 2-1 in the fourth. Lake Charles got within 10-6 in the fifth before Shiner scored two runs in the top of the sixth.
Also at the plate for Shiner, Colman was 3-for-4, three runs and one stolen base; Trojcak was 2-for-4, two runs and a triple.
Price hit 2-for-3, one run and one double; Ulcak was 2-for-3 with four RBI and one stolen base; Lyons tripled on 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run; Cuevas was 1-for-4 with two runs.
Boehm was 1-for-4 with one run; Bishop hit 1-for-4.
Lyons pitched 3 2/3 innings with five runs on four hits, three walks and two strikeouts; Colman pitched three innings in relief with one hit, one run, one walk and eight strikeouts.
Shiner 6, West Mesa (N.M.) 5
Shiner rallied from a 5-1 deficit to topple West Mesa, New Mexico on Monday.
Shiner trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth and Shiner plated five runs.
West Mesa outscored Shiner 2-0 in the second inning and 3-1 in the third.
Lyons started at pitcher and worked six innings with five runs on eight hits, five walks and seven strikeouts. Colman closed with one inning and three strikeouts.
Shiner got just four hits at the plate — Mikulencak was 1-for-1, double and RBI; Price was 1-for-2, double and run scored.
Lyons was 1-for-2, run and RBI; Cuevas was 1-for-3 with one run.
Bishop scored two runs, and Trojcak had one run and one RBI.
