Shiner football: Comanches rally to beat Poth 14-7
Caleb Cowan’s 25-yard touchdown with less than four minutes left in the game completed a second-half Comanche comeback Friday in Poth.
Shiner improved to 3-0 on the season by overcoming a slim 7-0 halftime deficit.
The game started with Shiner punting on its first two drives and the Pirates missing a 35-yard field goal attempt and failing to convert a fourth down.
The Pirates took a 7-0 lead less than halfway through the second quarter as quarterback Payton Helford hit Ryder Strover with a 55-yard strike and Travis Reynold booted the point after at the 7:33 mark of the second quarter.
The Comanches were held off the scoreboard for the half.
They forced the Pirates to punt on the opening drive of the third period. Shiner then drove 62 yards in six plays to tie the game. Quarterback Levi Werner completed an 8-yard pass to Quincy Jones on a 3rd-and-7 play from the Comanche 41. A few plays later, Tyler Harvery raced 43 yards for the touchdown and the 7-7 game after Anthony Hernandez’s point after.
Later in the quarter, Shiner got good field position at its own 42 but two flags during the drive killed the momentum.
The Pirates later had a 60-yard punt to give Shiner possession at its 20. Cowan’s 25-yard run capped a nine-play drive. Cowan tallied 45 yards total on the drive while Werner rushed twice for 23 yards.
Shiner ran for 221 yards on the night with Harvey gaining 97 yards on 10 attempts and Cowan rushing 15 times for 75 yards. Werner was 6-of-10 passing for 46 yards with Jones getting two catches for 19 yards and Kaden Neskora bringing down two balls for 12 yards.
For Poth, Helford was 10-for-13 for 116 yards and one touchdown while leading Poth’s ground game with 50 yards on 23 rushes. Stover had four receptions for 70 yards and one score.
Shiner hosts Boling this week for Homecoming and the first game of two-game home stand that concludes Sept. 25 with the district opener against Danbury.
