Shiner volleyball: Lady Comanches place third at Cuero Tournament

    The Lady Comanches placed third in the Cuero Tournament last Thursday through Saturday and won their season opener at Edna on Aug. 11.

    Shiner won five and lost three matches total in the tournament.
    Lady Comanches win two of three on Thursday 
    Shiner dropped their opening match to host Cuero 2-0 before beating Yorktown and Beeville Jones 2-0 to go 2-1 during Thursday’s pool play.

    Shiner swept the Kitty Kats 25-22, 25-22 in their second match on Thursday.
    Lexi Boner and Tinsley Vasek each had a kill, and Addie Prove hit an ace as the Lady Comanches scored nine of the first 10 points of the first game. Yorktown pulled back three points and Shiner took an 11-4 lead with a kill from Harlee Sevcik and one from Kayden Smith. Yorktown then outscored Shiner 12-9 and further closed the gap to 23-20 with kills by Avery Martin, Loreai Gowens and Gracie Stehling. The teams then split the last four points to give Shiner a 25-22 win in the set.
    Yorktown took a 3-1 lead after the first four points of the second set, followed by six ties and four lead changes. From a 12-12 score, the Lady Comanches went on a 5-0 run with a block from Sevcik and a pair of Smith aces.
    The Kitty Kats then outscored Shiner 4-1 and then went on a 4-2 run for a 20-20 tie.  Kiera Curtis and Savannah Durrett got a kill as Shiner closed out the set and match with a 5-2 run.

    Shiner 2, Beeville 0
    The Lady Comanches closed out Thursday by defeating the Lady Trojans 25-16, 25-21.
    Beeville scored the first two points of the opener before Shiner recorded six straight points on  a kill from Boner and Sevcik, and a Taylor Kocian ace.
    Later in the set, a Smith kills and serves by Vasek helped send the Lady Comanches on an 8-2 run.
    Beeville whittled the lead to 22-13 and the teams each scored three points to present Shiner with a nine-point margin of victory in the first game. Beeville scored the first three points of the second set and Shiner fought back to force 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6 ties before taking an 8-7 lead. The Lady Trojans went on a narrow 5-4 run for a 12-12 tie.  
    Several more ties ensured until Shiner went on a 6-2 run from a 19-19 score with kills by Sevcik, and a Boner kill and block to take the set and match.

    Cuero 2, Shiner 0
    Shiner opened the tournament with a 25-16, 25-16 loss to the host Lady Gobblers in the morning.
    Cuero led 9-2 after the first 11 points of the first set with a trio of aces by Ava Perez.  
    Shiner got a block from Curtis, a Vasek ace and later, a Curtis kill to battle to keep Cuero from taking off with the set. A kill by Aleciara Smallwood gave the Lady Gobblers the set win,
    The teams shared the first eight points of the second game; Cuero then scored three straight and Shiner did likewise for a 7-7 tie.
    Two blocks from Lady Gobbler Jessa Cox gave her team a 16-11 lead.  Plays from Smith helped Shiner get within 19-16; Cuero then scored the final six points to win the set and the match.

    The Lady Comanches won two of three matches on Friday.

    Shiner swept Yoakum 25-9, 25-10 to start off Friday.

    Shiner opens season with five-set win at Edna
    Kocian (22 assists, 21 digs) and Marie Johnson (15 assists, 10 digs) had a double double while Smith added 14 kills in Shiner’s season-opening 21-25, 25-16, 19-25, 26-24, 15-11 win at Edna to began the season.
