2024 election sets new local record turnout of voters

At the Monday, Nov. 25 Commissioners’ Court meeting, Lavaca County election administrator Tenia Hudson presented the voting results from the election held in early November.

According to Hudson, the county had a phenomenal voter turnout with a total of 10,533 casting a ballot.

Arguably, one could say it set a new record with voter participation.

Hudson said in the 2020 presidential election, Lavaca County had 10,162, which meant this year’s voter turnout was 371 more voters than the previous election.

In all, the 2024 election had 72.19% of the 14,590 registered county voters who were listed on the deadline date for registration on Oct. 7.

Regarding age group tallies for the 2024 voter turnout, Hudson reported:

• 18 year old – 128

• 19 - 29 – 1,055

• 30 - 39 – 1,181

• 40 - 49 – 1,499

• 50 - 59 – 1,617

• 60 - 64 – 1,077

• 65-plus – 3,967

Hudson spoke about the 18 year old age group having 128 voters in comparison to none in 2020.

“In 2020, we had zero 18 year old citizens vote, but in this year’s election we had 128,” Hudson said. “Also, as usual, our largest age group for voter turnout was the 65 and over age group with 3,967.”

“In comparing Lavaca County voter turnout to Victoria area county voters, I do not have a comparison,” Hudson said. “However, during early voting when we were at 30%, the other counties were also around the same.”

Regarding if any state election inspectors visited Lavaca County polling locations, Hudson said there were four of the locations having a state inspector visit.

“I would like to thank all the election workers, who helped out. The election would not have been possible without them,” Hudson said. “I also would like to thank all the precinct chairs for all their involvement and encouragement during this time. They were a very big help for us.”
