All three current Luling council members retain their posts
Two of four city propositions pass, one gets voted down and the other ends in split vote
The three incumbents will be returning to their respective posts on the Luling city council, voters decided, after some rather tight races of two of those respective seats in Saturday’s elections.
Unofficial election night results showed Ward 1’s incumbent councilwoman defeating challenger Jennifer K. Moore 26-21, Ward 2’s incumbent Lee Rust defeating challenger Lisa G. Gaspard 84-15, and Ward 3’s incumbent Marc Taylor besting challengers Chris Jabsen and Ashali Ann Garcia 20-19-4, respectively.
Garcia, in might be noted, bowed out of the running late in the race after learning her mother, who lives out of state, was diagnosed with late stage, terminal cancer.
When it came to the city’s four proposed amendments to its city charter, the voting was all over the board, unofficial results from the city showed.
Proposition 1, which would have allowed the local fire department to elect its own chief rather than have the chief appointed by the city manager, unofficially got voted down 132 votes to 119 votes.
Proposition 2, which allowed the mayor and councilmembers three terms rather than just two terms of office, as is now in the city charter, unofficially passed 163-87, as did Proposition 3, which dealt with council vacancies and how those got filled. It unofficially passed 175-74.
Proposition 4, which would have allowed the judge to be someone other than a city resident and allowed for the mayor to serve in his or her stead should that person become indisposed for service, wound tied 127-127.
How the city will resolve the split vote and the act of making these unofficial election night returns actually part of the official city record will be addressed at the next Luling city council meeting on Thursday.
