Brahmas, Comanches meet for the 10th straight year
The Hallettsville Brahmas host the Shiner Comanches in the season lid-lifter here Friday evening starting at 7:30 p.m.
Here is Brahma head coach Levi Montgomery’s take on the Thursday’s scrimmage: “Before we even consider our week one opponent, we’ve gotta focus on ourselves. Consistency is the most obvious thing we need to fix. Early in the scrimmage we had some mental mistakes and did not perform as well as we should have on either side of the ball. Then, in the live quarter we drove the ball on offense at will to score, and then forced a quick three and out on defense. Everyone knows we can do it. We just have to be consistent.”
State finalists a year ago, the Comanches are loaded coming into the season.
The game will mark the debut of junior quarterback Kason Podhajsky, who was a receiver last year.
The Brahmas defeated Shiner for the third year in a row last season and hold a 14-7 edge in the series.
The Comanches were 12-4 in 2024 and lost to Muenster in the state finals. Shiner graduated just four seniors from that team.
Shiner returns 7/7 starters and the big returnee is RB/DB Quincy Jones.
The Comanches have a stable of running backs and Triston Vesely, Caleb Cowan, Tyler Harvey, Landyn Pohler and Jace Caddell will also be in the rotation since Jones plays both ways.
Jake Simper will be the new QB. TE Bode Werner, DE Charlie Clifford and OL/DL Jacob Neskora head some of the returning starters.
“Concerning our week one opponent, everyone knows what Shiner is gonna bring,” Montgomery said. “A state finalist from last year with a bunch of starters coming back on both sides of the ball. Their speed is our biggest concern.”
The Comanches are ranked No. 2 by Texas Football Magazine behind Muenster.
