Brahmas grind out win over Apaches, 14-7
If you are into offense, the Hallettsville-Gonzales game here Friday night was not the one to see.
A team will take a win, no matter if it’s pretty or ugly.
The case was the latter for the Hallettsville Brahmas who pulled out a 14-7 victory over the Apaches.
Mycole Pegoda scored both Brahma touchdowns on runs of 31 and 64 yards. The junior quarterback gained 146 yards rushing on 16 carries and completed 4 of 10 passes for 33 yards with one interception.
“Mycole is going to get better and better,” Brahma head coach Levi Montgomery said.
“We have to take better care of the football. We had less turnovers in the Shiner game,” Montgomery added.
The Brahmas had only 215 yards total offense to Gonzales’ 140 and the teams made 10 first downs apiece.
“Our defense was outstanding,” Montgomery said. “The defense did not wear down. Gonzales does not play many players both ways.”
The Brahmas were not penalized, but coughed up the football twice and had a pass intercepted. The first touchdown of the night came on the second play of the second quarter. In a play that could have been a disaster, Pegoda picked up a loose ball and turned it into a 31-yard touchdown run. Lucas Hill added the extra point for a 7-0 lead at the 11:13 mark. Gonzales recovered a Hallettsville fumble on the Brahma 33-yard line with 7:46 left in the second quarter before the Brahma defense stiffened and the Apaches missed a 27-yard field goal attempt.
In the third period, the teams traded turnovers. Nathan Henke fell on an Apache fumble on the Brahma 26 to stop a drive before the Brahmas gave it right back on an interception by Tyler Hoffman at the Hallettsville 42. The Apaches drove the distance in 8 plays and scored on the first play of the fourth period on a 1-yard run by halfback Ayden Ramirez and the extra point tied the score at 7-all.
After swapping possessions, Hallettsville took over on its own 36-yard before Pegoda got the local crowd excited with a 64-yard touchdown run with 8:12 to go in the fourth quarter to make the final 14-7. Gonzales had two possessions after the touchdown, but never got into Brahma territory.
The Apaches punted with 3:08 to play and Pegoda carried 5 straight times to run out the clock. The first downs were even at 10 apiece.
