Brahmas lose another tough one

Another great effort by the Hallettsville Brahmas did not equal a win.

The Brahmas suffered a 28-20 tough loss to Rockport-Fulton before a sizeable Homecoming crowd here Friday night.

The Brahmas (2-4) saw a 20-14 halftime lead dissipate in the 28-20 loss to the Pirates.

“We just didn’t make the plays in the second half,” head Brahmas football coach Levi Montgomery said. “Again we played hard and didn’t win.”

The Brahmas’ only turnover in the game led to a Pirate touchdown and a Dillon Brittain fumble recovery led to a Brahma score.

R-F rushed for 305 yards and totaled 363 yards total offense to Hallettsville’s 334.

Halfback Tradyn Williams went over 100 yards rushing for the second game in a row with a career-high 122 yards on 17 carries. Halfback Tracy Alvarado gained 119 yards rushing for the Pirates.

Quarterback Mycole Pegoda was held under a 100 rushing yards for the first time this season and gained 98 yards on 18 tries with two touchdowns. He threw 9 passes in 4 attempts for 75 yards and a touchdown.

The Pirates made 17 first downs to the Brahmas’ 12.

The Brahmas gave up the ball twice in the Red Zone - once on an interception and one time on downs when they were stopped at the Pirate 6 after a fourth-and five play fell a yard short with four minutes to play. R-F moved out of trouble with runs of 38 and 35 yards by Alvarado. The Pirates moved the ball to the Brahma 24 before going into victory formation.

Hallettsville got out of the chute early when Pegoda hooked up with Preston Wagner for a 72- yard pass and run on the game’s third play from scrimmage. Lucas Hill added the point-after.

The Pirates scored at the 3:57 mark of the first period following a 10-play, 71-yard drive. Trevor Garcia did the honors with a 7-yard run and Yorman Guerra kicked the PAT.

The fumble recovery by Brittain gave Hallettsville good field position at the Pirate 43. Pegoda scored on a 1-yard plunge and Hill added the extra point for a 14-7 advantage.

Hallettsville expanded its lead to 20-7 with 2:23 remaining in the second period.

A 35-yard run by Williams sparked the drive and Pegoda went the final 2 yards for the touchdown.

But the Pirates came back just before the half with a 4-yard run by Caleb Willshire to trim the lead to 20-14 at the intermission.

R-F took the lead for good at the beginning of the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Garcia to end a 62-yard, 11-play drive.

The Pirates’ final score came on a 19-yard run by Alvarado with 8:49 to go in the fourth period. The touchdown came after Pegoda’s arm was hit attempting a pass and was intercepted by Wyatt Kalhoefer.
