Brahmas score first before dropping 48-12 decision to cards

COLUMBUS – The Columbus Cardinals have had more than their share of injuries, but still had plenty of ammunition left in the arsenal to take a 48-12 victory over the Hallettsville Brahmas in a District 12, Division I game at Massey Field Friday night.

Hallettsville took a 7-0 on the opening possession of the game, prior to the Cardinals reeling off 48 unanswered points.

“Playing Columbus, we completely understood the caliber football team they were, in particular their quarterback (Aaron Schobel),” Brahma head coach Levi Montgomery said. “ He was as good as advertised.

“We certainly did some good things though. Offensively, we were nearly able to eat up the entire first quarter with a very methodical drive. This drive is an indicator of what our offense can be,” Montgomery added.

“Even with that initial drive, as the game continued, defensively, we were unable to get off the field consistently. Though we did a good job of eliminating the very deep balls, Columbus was able to throw the intermediate routes and move the ball. Nonetheless, we’re proud of the way our kids competed, and executed in many way against a very good Columbus team,” Montgomery added.

Columbus started three drives in Hallettsville territory, one after a lost fumble.

The Brahmas took the opening kickoff and moved down the field in a workmanlike manner.

The drive took nine minutes and 11 seconds off the clock with the Brahmas converting on three third down plays.

Brahma quarterback Mycole Pegoda completed three passes for 25 yards and carried 8 times for 44 yards before scoring from 2 yards out. The extra point was missed and the score stayed 6-0.

Columbus took a 28-6 lead at the half.

Halfback Bryan Salazar scored on a 3-yard run for the first score with 10:04 left in the second period.

Schobel, who passed for 125 yards, connected with split end Elijah Usher for the next score.

The Cardinals scored three consecutive touchdown after that.

Schobel connected for a 33-yard scoring pass to Usher on a post patter, and Adam Schobel scored the final points of the half on a one-yard plunge.

The Brahmas had a good looking drive stymied at the Cardinal 25 when a 2-yard pass to Jesse Cavazos fell five yards short of a first down.

Schobel was flushed out of the pocket and raced 69-yards for a touchdown.

Hallettsville scored its final touchdown with 8:12 remaining in the fourth period on an 8-yard run by Pegoda. The drive covered 71 yards and took 12 plays.

Columbus had which is probably a season-low 325 yards total offense to Hallettsville’s 311 yards.

Pegoda rushed for 83 yards on 19 carries and completed 9 of 17 passes for 78 yards. Halfback Tradyn Williams gained 83 yards on 18 attempts.

Cavazos caught 5 passes for 38 yards, Preston Wagner 3 for 27 and Colt Edmonds one for 14 yards.
