Brahmas visit Shiner in curtain-raiser
The Hallettsville-Shiner rivalry continues Friday night at Comanche Stadium with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
The game will mark the debut of Brahma head coach Levi Montgomery.
The Brahmas broke a four-game skid with a 14-7 decision last season in Hallettsville and also broke Shiner’s 30-game winning streak.
Gone is all-state halfback Dalton Brooks (A&M) and quarterback Ryan Peterson (Sam Houston State), but there is no such thing as rebuilding at Shiner.
“We certainly have a ton of respect for coach (Daniel) Boedeker and his staff and the program they have had in Shiner,’ Montgomery said. “They are going to be wellcoached, disciplined and play very hard. We know we have to at be our best to have a chance to win the game.”
Shiner returns only one offensive lineman and has a new quarterback in junior Carson Schuette.
Note: Lineman Kyle Svetlik will be out several weeks with an injury.
Scrimmage:
Hallettsville’s final scrimmage was here with 4A Calhoun Thursday.
“I was proud of the way the kids handled a little adversity early in the scrimmage and then came out strong,” Montgomery said. “We are thoroughly pleased with where we are.”
The Brahmas outscored the Sandcrabs 14-7 in game conditions.
