Brahmas win first-ever state track championship
Who would have thunk it! The Hallettsville Brahmas went to the UIL State Track and Field Championships Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium with just four athletes and shared a state championship with Yoakum with each scoring 36 points.
“We thought we had a pretty far outside chance,” Brahma coach Dustin Keller said. “Last year we had an injury that prevented us from placing.”
The two foursomes were made up of Damarion Austin, Layne Gerke, Caden Willis and Rashaun Sidney.
The issue was in doubt until the mile relay. Holliday had to finish less than fourth f o r t h e Brahmas and Yoakum to claim the championship.
The Brahmas set a school record in winning the 800 relay with a time of 1:26.93 while Yoakum was clocked in 1:27.03 for the silver medal.
The Brahmas broke another school record with a time of 41.87 in the 400 relay to Yoakum’s 41.81. Hallettsville gained state in the 400 relay via a wild card.
