Cards Too Much for Brahmas
COLUMBUS–You can’tmake mistakes against state ranked teams and hope to get away with it.
Case in point: A key third quarter turnover led to a Columbus touchdown and the No. 2 ranked Cardinals went on to a 42-14 victory over the Hallettsville Brahmas Friday night in the District12-3A, Division I opener.
We knew going in we were going to have to play a very complete game, but we failed to do so, and that’s on me. I did not have our guys prepared for that caliber of opponent,” Brahma head coach Levi Montgomery said. “We were certainly in the game for the most part. In the fourth quarter we were down 21-14, but defensively, we couldn’t get off the field on third down, and turned the ball over on offense.”
The Brahmas trimmed the lead to 21-14 in the third quarter after a 75- yard, 9-play drive which ended with quarterback Jorian Wilson going in from the 2.
But Hallettsville lost a fumble on its 24-yard line which led to a touchdown and then failed on a fourth down try which led to another Cardinal score.
The Cards totaled 406 yards to the Brahmas’ 277.
Columbus quarterback Adam Schobel threw for 247 yards. His counterpart, Jorian Wilson, completed17 of 24 for 169 yards with an interception.
The Brahma running game was pretty much shut down. Halfback Jashaun Price gained 69 yards on 17 carries.
Layne Gerke led receivers with 8 for 108 yards including a fantastic catch for a gain of 47 yards. Price had 3 receptions for 24 yards and Rashaun Sidney 4 for 25.
Hallettsville’s first touchdown came after a turnover on the Cardinal 13-yard line. It took four plays to score with Wilson going in from the 4 and Ty Tomek added the extra point.
In the third quarter, a Gerke’s reception for 47 yards led the Brahmas’ third period score.
RUSHING: Jashaun Price 17-69, Jorian Wilson 9-26. Layne Gerke 5-13.
