Local artist hits homerun with new mural wall
Local artist Bob Barrera introduced a splash of color to downtown Hallettsville with a mural dedicated to the Houston Astros and their latest World Series Championship on the wall of his soon-to-be studio last week.
Barrera said the mural is the first artwork to be displayed to drivers heading south through Hallettsville on 77A as they pass what will be a rotating mural wall on his studio on 2nd Street. The World Series Champs artwork reportedly required 12-14 hours of work over several days.
“I am a big Astros fan, and this (design) seemed fitting. I (moved into the studio) on November 1st, and they won the World Series a couple of days later…,” said Barrera. “(The wall will be updated) every few months. It will change with murals dedicated to current events, tributes to first responders, and seasonal designs. I might end up changing it to whatever pops in my mind.”
The artist said he had always wanted to bring a rotating art display to Hallettsville to keep locals and visitors eager to see his next creation. The studio, Created, by Bob Barrera Originals, did not have an official grand opening date as of last week, though the owner aims for it to serve as a creative hub in town once it is up and operating.
Barrera said he had long hoped to open an art studio as an independent artist and was very satisfied with the public response to his first studio wall mural.
“It’s been a dream for as long as I can remember to do something like this,” said Barrera.
“I had people honk and holler out their windows when I was putting it up. Seeing the community get behind me when I do something like this is exciting. I didn’t think I would have this much feedback already.”
