Historical conference happens Saturday in Hallettsville

The 25th annual Alton C. Allen Historical Conference will take place Saturday at the Kocian Building on the Courthouse Square in Hallettsville.

The Lavaca County Historical Commission has four speakers lined up with their topics mainly focusing on the impact of the Civil War in Texas.

Registration is from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at a cost of $10 per person. Coffee and pastries will be available in the morning.

Lavaca County Historical Commission chairman, Doug Kubicek, recommends those attending pre-register due to the fire code allowing only 140 people in the Kocian Building. He said by pre-registering, it  will guarantee a ticket to the conference.

Rose Ann Bacha-Garza will start things off from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with her topic about the Civil War on the Rio Grande.

Bacha-Garza will be followed by Andy Hall, who will speak from 10:45 to 11:45 on the Civil War Blockade Running on the Texas Coast.

A lunch break will take place from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. with homemade noodle soup and chicken salad sandwiches served.

The afternoon topics will include Ed Cotham speaking from 1:15 to 2:15 regarding the Civil War Naval Battles on the Texas Coast.

Former Lavaca County attorney, John Stuart Fryer will close out the day from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. who will be speaking about the Missouri Partisan Rangers and Along the Lavaca: Evidence, Lore and Foundation.
