Moulton leads points bracket at academic UIL state meet

MHS Spelling & Social Studies teams win gold, math team takes silver

Moulton High School brought home several top finishes at Saturday’s Class A academic UIL state championship in Austin, including two team golds for the spelling and social studies teams, both of whom are now back-to-back state champions.

Moulton tallied 102 total points at the May 7 Academic UIL State Meet in Austin, which places them on top of all other Class A schools in Texas in the UIL academic competition. They await results from the speech events competition, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 21, before the final school point leaders are announced.

Both the MHS Spelling Team, made up of Julianna Buehring, Leslie Juarez, Angelica Manzano and Oscar Lugo, and the Social Studies Team, including Catherine Wenske, Alex Tortoledo, Moises Manzano, and Blakely Richter, were defending state champs coming to this year’s contest.

Both Buehring and Wenske also claimed individual gold medals in the events.

Other individuals placing at the state meet included: Juarez placed third, and Manzano took fourth; Lugo, although on the first-place team, was not assigned a ranked place in the result. Coaches for that event are Jamie Dornak and Heather Olivarez.

On the social studies side, Tortoledo placed fourth individually, and Manzano took fifth; team anchor Richter, much like Lugo on the spelling team, was not ranked individually. Olivarez also coaches the social studies team.

The MHS Math Team claimed state runner-up honors. Members include Tatum Langston, Lily Simper, Trenton Meisetschleager and Jaxon Bartos. Randy Stevenson coaches the event, as well as the calculators event. Simper was the lone competitor in that latter event and wound up a silver medalist at the state competition.

The final contest result from Saturday’s Austin state meet came from Ready Writing Coach Anna Bartos. Zoey Sturm was the lone competitor from Moulton in that event, and she took a sixth-place finish.
