Court proposes tax rate

Lavaca County tax assessor-collector, Deborah A. Sevcik, presented the 2025 appraisal roll and tax rate calculations at Monday’s, Aug. 11, Commissioners’ Court meeting.Sevcik told the court the total appraised value showed an increase of 1.09% over last year’s values.

Golden Arches Go Up

The new McDonald’s building located on N. Texana Street is beginning to take shape, with the iconic golden arches now in place. While the burgers and fries aren’t ready and no word on the grand opening date, locals are already lovin’ it.

Hallettsville rolls out welcome mat and earns tourism friendly city

Governor Greg Abbott congratulated the City of Hallettsville on being designated as a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community by Travel Texas after completing the multi-step certification process. The announcement was released in a press release dated Tuesday, July 29.

Marvin Charles Jurica, 94, of New Braunfels, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 4, 2025.Marvin was born on March 27, 1931 in Gonzales, to the late Willie and Mary Pesek Jurica. He was raised in the Peach Creek area where he grew up on the farm and attended Kokernot School.

Shiner Rotary Club welcomes district officials to meeting

The Rotary Club of Shiner welcomed District Governor Todd Smith as well as District Governor Elect Jeff Coleman from the Central Texas Rotary District 5870.  During the meeting, the vision and goals for the upcoming year in the Central Texas District and beyond were discussed.

Shiner Pilot Club hosts teacher luncheons

On August 4 and 5, the Pilot Club of Shiner hosted a teacher luncheon at Shiner ISD and Shiner Catholic School.  “We are so excited to have you back and ready for a fantastic new school year. Your commitment to our students is inspiring.

Gaslight awards presented

The Gaslight Theatre in Shiner recently finished the highly successful run of the “Voice of the Prairie” directed by Leslie Buesing and Vicki Westergren.  The Gaslight Theatre is celebrating its 130th birthday and its 50th year of continuous theatre in 2025.

Shiner park improvements are in the works

Both Green Dickson Park and Welhausen Park are getting some major upgrades in the coming months. “Different organizations are working on various projects at these parks,” Shiner City Council member David Schroeder said.
