The summer is almost over for area students as the 2025-26 school term is around the corner.Some of the schools will be starting classes next week, while the others will begin the following week.Area school starting dates include:Tuesday, Aug. 5• Ezzell ISDWednesday, Aug. 6• Vysehrad ISD• Yoakum St.

Shiner baseball: Wenske plays in 17 games with four starts for WCJC

2023 Comanche graduate Drew Wenske continued his collegiate baseball career as a sophomore at Wharton County Junior College during the 2025 season.Wenske played in 17 games at pitcher and WCJC posted a 27-28 record, 17-18 in conference play, 11-10 at home, 8-13 on the road and 8-5 at neutral sites.

Several members of the 2025 2ADII state finalist Shiner softball team received various All-State awards following the season.TSWA All-StateJunior Lauren Springfield was awarded Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State Second Team as Designated Player/Designated Hitter/Flex.

The Shiner Comanches and St. Paul Cardinals start workouts  for fall sports this week.ShinerVolleyballThe Lady Comanches will open practice tomorrow (Friday) from 1-4 p.m.On Saturday, practice will go from 9-11:30 a.m.Workouts on Aug. 4-7 will be from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

Shiner graduates Tyler Palmer (2021) and Doug Brooks (2022) each played some in the 2024 season for the Javelina football team.The Javelinas were 7-4 and 6-3 in conference play, 3-3 at home and 4-1 on the road.
